Bleed

Definition

The extra margin (usually 3 mm) beyond the final trim of a printed piece, so images and backgrounds that reach the edge don't show a white sliver after trimming.

In practice

Print file = 3 mm bleed + crop marks + embedded fonts + CMYK colors. Ask the printer for specifications before closing the file.
