Packaging design that sells: the 3 seconds on the shelf

From a meter away: what it is and whose. In hand: why this one. In e-commerce: the box is the first touch.

On the shelf, the shopper decides in about three seconds and from a meter away. Packaging has that time to answer two questions: what it is and whose it is. Only later, in hand, does it answer the third: why this one.

From a meter away

  • Clear category: the shopper must recognize "this is coffee" without reading. Category color and shape help; straying too far confuses.
  • Visible brand: logo at a size readable from a distance, where the eye lands first (upper third).
  • One differentiator only: "organic", "sugar-free", "artisanal". Two compete; three vanish.

In hand

  • Hierarchy: product name > variant > benefit > mandatory information.
  • A back that answers the next question (how to use, ingredients, origin).
  • Texture and finish: touch communicates price before the price does.

In e-commerce

The shelf is the listing photo, and packaging is the first physical touch with the brand — the unboxing. Custom box, message inside, product well seated. It's the moment that becomes a photo on the customer's Instagram.

Before producing

Realistic mockup, color proof and a test on the real shelf (or a photo of it) next to competitors. Packaging that looks beautiful alone on screen can disappear on the shelf.

The mistakes that leave products behind

Too much information on the front. Thin fonts unreadable from a meter. Another category's color (coffee in milk's blue). A product photo worse than the product. And ignoring regulation: a misplaced mandatory band costs a recall.
